Horaflora's "The Gland Canyon" is a crepuscular, moody, and richly detailed sound environment that begins with a gentle tug on your ears, and before you know it, you're cochlea deep in audible unknowables. Selections of binaural field recordings, improvised acoustic automata, and handmade electronic treatments all merge, collide, divide, and are nearly alive in this hour+ tour de force.
Headphones recommended for maximum immersion.
Horaflora is the project of experimental artist Raub Roy. I saw him perform live a few months ago while he was on tour with Styrofoam Sanchez. To put it lightly it was one of the more wild experimental, avant garde, noise performances I’ve ever seen. There were electric toothbrushes, about eight tape recorders playing all over the room, balloons floating around with small metal nuts inside them, some sort of electronic music, and a didgeridoo from what I can recall. Honestly it was one of the best show experiences I’ve had in awhile. So when I received this Horaflora tape in the mail for review I was stoked!
Horaflora’s, “The Gland Canyon” is the first release on Roy’s new label Weird Ear Records. It was created over the course of five years and a lot of it was recorded with binaural microphones. Which are microphones that go inside the artist’s ears, creating a very unique atmosphere. Essentially when you listen to The Gland Canyon, you hear exactly what Roy himself was hearing. So listening to these recordings with headphones is a must.
Once you get those headphones on there is no turning back. It feels as if you have just jumped off an airplane flying over a huge entrance into someone’s nervous system. Slowly you seep into an environment ruled by sound. The unknown surrounds you, and as the listener you are forced to give in to what Roy has in store for you. Don’t worry though, it’s all intriguing sounds range from breathing to alien noises that are unexplainable. What really matters on this journey is that you are always there. You are soaked in sound and trust me you won’t want to leave the Gland Canyon before the journey is over, because you would be missing out.
Definitely grab this tape or download the files for free, and be on the look out for more Weird Ear releases!
